A warm welcome to Oddfellows Brass

Oddfellows Brass is a friendly, happy brass band based in Leicestershire and sponsored by The Oddfellows. We play across the length and breadth of Britain – and sometimes further afield – and have a varied repertoire. We are all about making music, having fun and making friends, and we look forward to seeing you at a concert very soon

About the band

Oddfellows Brass started life as a youth band under the name of Unity Brass in 1981. A steady evolutionary process has, over the years, enabled the band to maintain its reputation as a friendly and informal organisation which achieves excellent musical progress.

The band has made a steady progression in the National Brass Band rankings, achieving qualification for the National Brass Band Finals on six occasions, including a performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The band was runner-up in the Second Section Finals in 1995, and reached the First Section Finals in September 1998. In 1999, the band was promoted once again, this time to the elite Championship Section.

The Band has undertaken several international tours, including four visits to the Caribbean island of Barbados, and has continued to grow to enjoy its status as a well supported, happy and successful brass band. We undertake a varied range of concerts throughout the year and remain proudly sponsored by The Oddfellows.

Meet our new musical director

The new Musical Director of Oddfellows Brass is Ben Smith. Despite being one of the youngest musical directors in British banding, Ben has a long musical history – he started playing cornet at age seven with Harborough Band, before switching to percussion and then euphonium at 11. He was Principal Euphonium for the Northamptonshire County Training Brass Band and also played with Foresters Brass for two years.

Ben progressed on to the award-winning County Youth Brass Band and became Principal Euphonium in his second year with Foresters. Ben was also a member of the European Championship-winning Youth Brass 2000.

He went on to study at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (graduating with First Class Honours in 2021) and in the meantime rejoined Foresters Brass as Principal Euphonium. In 2020 he took up Second Euphonium with Grimethorpe Colliery Band.

Oddfellows Brass is Ben’s first Musical Director position and he has settled in well, guiding the band to second-place and fourth-place finishes in their first two contests together.
